Full roundup of candidates for upcoming Chalford by-election

After the passing of much-loved Conservative councillor Liz Peters, the Chalford seat was left vacant, as a result there will be a by-election held to fill the spot.

This will take place on Thursday, November 23, with polling open from 7am until 10pm.

All four of the political parties that make up SDC have nominated candidates.

As it stands, out of the 51 seats on the council, the Conservatives have 21, Labour 18, Green eight, Liberal Democrats two, Conservative (no group) one seat, and one vacant position.

SDC is led by a ‘rainbow coalition’ of Labour, Green and Lib Dem, surpassing the majority stake on the council with a combined 28 seats versus 22.

A full election is held every four years, with the next one coming in 2020, this election is just to fill one spot - a by-election.

The ward is currently represented by two Conservative district councillors, Debbie Young and Chas Fellows.

Representing the Lib Dems is Kris Beacham, Robin Lewis is standing for the Greens, followed by Darren Loftus for the Conservatives and Karen Pitney for Labour.

We asked each candidate for 50 words on why you should vote for them.

Robin Lewis, Green Party:

“I believe my organisational skills and experience of supporting people as a counsellor, coordinator of courses and chair of the union at SGS College will stand me in good stead to fight to retain investment in the district's essential public services such as neighbourhood wardens, youth services, traffic calming and affordable housing.”

Darren Loftus, Conservative:

“I believe actions speak louder than words which is why Chalford Conservatives are doing, rather than talking.

“From lunch clubs for the elderly to raising money to save local pubs, we’re already doing the things that make a difference to peoples’ lives.

“Vote for me I’ll fight for our community’s interests at SDC.”

Kris Beacham, Liberal Democrat:

“I believe Chalford and Bussage needs someone who will fight our corner, reflect the views of our community and to fight for Chalford and Bussage.

“This election is about our area, not about what is up and down in Westminster.

"If elected, I will always put Chalford and Bussage above party politics.”

Karen Pitney, Labour:

“Isn’t it time for a different perspective for Chalford?

“As a Labour Councillor I would work closely with our current two district council representatives to ensure every voice is heard and the very best outcome for our community is reached putting first the safety, protection and growth of Chalford and surrounding villages.”
