MOTORISTS in Gloucestershire are to be canvassed for their opinions to help find a solution to one of the county's most infuriating roads.

Gloucestershire County Council and project leader Highways England, have announced plans to ask users of the A417 for help in finding the 'missing link' in the new year.

While much of the A417 between the M5 at Gloucester and the M4 at Swindon is dual-carriageway, the missing link refers to a five kilometre stretch of single carriageway on the trunk road.

More than 34,000 vehicles use the road each day, which is a key link between the West Midlands and London.

In early 2018, Highways England will go to the public to help find a solution to a part of the county's road network which has one of the worst average vehicle delays of all routes in the region.

The county council says that finding a solution is a priority as nearly 7,000 people and businesses have pledged their support for the scheme.

Councillor Lynden Stowe, cabinet member for economic development said: “The county council has been pushing for decades to sort out the A417 missing link.

"I know road users will be as pleased as I am that progress is moving forwards.

"As always, residents’ opinions are the driving factor behind what we do, so it is excellent news that Highways England will be consulting with road users in the new year.”
