AFTER several false alarms over the last couple of days this morning the district is covered in a blanket of snow and Gloucestershire Police has issued a warnings.

The district woke up to a good covering of snow this morning and, with snow forecast to continue for the rest of the day, there are already reports of icy and dangerous roads.

People living in Nailsworth have alerted people to icy conditions making by the w and Spring Hill perilous to anyone attempting to drive up or down the roads.

Highways England has issued a warning to anyone planning to travel today, as well as links to advice for travellers which includes the following statement:

"In winter check the local weather forecast for warnings of icy or snowy weather. 

"DO NOT drive in these conditions unless your journey is essential.

"If it is, take great care and allow more time for your journey.

"Take an emergency kit of de-icer and ice scraper, torch, warm clothing and boots, first aid kit, jump leads and a shovel, together with a warm drink and emergency food in case you get stuck or your vehicle breaks down."

Police are already working hard to clear the A417 near the Air Balloon roundabout where there have been several different collisions resulting in the road being closed in both directions between the A429 Cirencester and the A436 Ullenhall.

Road users are advised to use M4 and M5 as alternative routes.

An amber weather warning has been issued for the rest of the day:

"A spell of heavy snow is likely over parts of Wales, the Midlands and parts of Northern and Eastern England on Sunday.

"Road, rail and air travel delays are likely, as well as stranding of vehicles and public transport cancellations.

"There is a good chance that some rural communities could become cut off.

"This is an update to extend the warning area as far south as Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex."

Temperatures are currently freezing, but those venturing outside are warned that the chilly air will feel more like -5C.
