Press Release

Stroud’s MP David Drew is urging contractors affected by the collapse of Carillion to contact him urgently.

“I am extremely worried about the impact on families and their livelihoods. This could have a real impact on the day to day lives of landscapers, groundworkers, plumbers and electricians and I would like anyone affected to contact me,” said Mr Drew.

Firms which worked for the construction giant on private sector deals, will only have two days of government support, warned Mr Drew, according to advice received from Cabinet Office Minister David Lidington.

Construction form Carillion used an extensive network of subcontractors and those small firms now face an anxious wait to find out if they will be paid.

Carillion, the UK’s second largest construction firm, which employs 20,000 people has collapsed, with debts of around £1.5 billion. It has been estimated that the company owes money to up to 30,000 firms.

“I am deeply concerned that the collapse of Carillion could have an impact on any small companies in Gloucestershire,” said David Drew, Labour MP for Stroud.

“I want to make sure that we do everything we can to support contractors who have been affected and would urge them to contact me.

“This is a situation which should never have been allowed to happen. The Government awarded Carillion £2bn worth of contracts after the firm started to issue profit warnings. We now need a full investigation into that process.

“Contracts with large companies are the lifeblood for small firms and I am deeply worried about the wider impact this may have on people’s families and livelihoods.

“The Government’s dogged pursuit of an ideology to allow private sector companies to cream profits off public services has been shown to be a sham.

“It has failed to deliver improved public services and, yet again, taxpayers’ money will be used to come to the rescue of a private firm.”

Anyone affected should contact David Drew on david.drew.mp@parliament.uk or call his office on 01453 755234.
