A PAIR of talented pupils from a school in Stonehouse took part in a prestigious maths competition last month.

Oliver Preece and Alice Stevenson, who attend Hopelands School, did outstandingly to qualify for the competition.

The Primary Maths Challenge boasts Year 5 and Year 6 pupils from across Britain and even some from abroad.

Every pupil from Year 5 and 6 at Hopelands entered the competition but only Alice and Oliver made it to the Bonus Round.

Alice performed brilliantly on the day, taking home the silver award, missing out on gold by one mark.

Oliver also performed strongly but due to the high level of competition didn’t take home an award.

To put it into perspective 68 000 pupils entered in November with 3255 pupils who scored 20 or more being invited to take part in the Bonus Round in February.

Out of the 3255 pupils who took part in the Bonus Round 167 achieved a Gold award and 657 achieved a Silver award with 1033 achieving a Bronze award.

This means these two bright sparks made the top five per cent in the country.
