A POLITICAL and environmental writer and campaigner challenged the minds of pupils from two Stroud-based schools earlier this month.

George Monbiot asked sixth formers from Marling and Stroud High school to think about the merits of creating a ‘politics of belonging’ at a talk on Wednesday, March 7.

George was presenting his ideas that form the basis of his new book – Out of the Wreckage: A new Politics for an Age of Crisis.

He challenged the audience to think about the three threats to the modern world – environmental destruction, economic inequality, and extreme political ideology.

George also suggested that we can create a fairer, kinder and more truly democratic society by returning to a time when communities worked together for the greater good and shared wealth and resources.

He said that individuals, families and communities can take back control back from the political elite.

George then answered questions from the audience, which included students from Pates Grammar School.

“The students listened with great interest and asked some really excellent questions,” said George.

“I hope that they left the lecture thinking about how we can improve the lives of everyone, even on a local level, and be a bit nicer and more considerate to fellow human beings and our planet.
