ON May bank holiday weekend music lovers of Stroud will be treated to an evening of funk-filled beats from a line-up of musical legends.

Forefathers of hip hop, The Sugarhill Gang, will be supported by Stroud's own DJ geniuses, Stroud Block Party.

Fans have enthusiastically welcomed the news, which comes in the wake of Stroud Fringe festival's announcement that 2018 would be a fallow year for the event.

The Sugarhill Gang is an American hip hop group, known for bringing the genre its first mainstream success with the smash hit ‘Rapper’s Delight’ in 1979.

With a backing based on Chic’s disco classic ‘Good Times’, it was the first hip hop song to make the US Billboard Hot 100.

It still remains one of the best known, most quoted and most loved hip hop tracks in history, opening the door for every hip hop act we know and love today.

Stroud Block Party crew is DJs Dubbu, Will Mendoza and Tom Monobrow, the trio behind the infamous Stroud Fringe Block Party nights, which sees a sleepy Cotswold town transformed into a pumping party, set in the back streets of NYC.

A spokesperson for the Stroud-based DJ collective said: "We're truly made up that these old school hip hop legends are coming to Stroud.

"This is the first of three very special Stroud Block Party events we've got planned for this year - we'll be announcing the others in due course."
