A NEW shop has opened in Stroud which offers unpackaged food as well as a selection of household and personal care items, with the minimum amount of packaging possible.

Although the Gloucester Street premises are small the owner, Julie Brown, has worked hard to pick items which are plastic free, where she has been able to, and the focus is on avoiding single use plastic where possible.

Owner Julie Brown explained that the shop will provide a wide range of items which will be competitively priced to suit every pocket.

“We have spent months researching the items that we’ll be stocking in order to minimise plastic packaging and the waste that so many of us encounter during our weekly shop,” she said.

“It’s a process that we’re still very much exploring, the focus is on providing a wide range of goods, that everyone can afford, in a shopping environment that is fun and accessible.”

Stocking loose items such as nuts, grains and dried fruits in glass jars, customers are encouraged to bring their own containers to take home any purchases.

However, for those who are unable to bring their own bags and jars to take goodies home options other than the standard plastic bags will be available.

Additionally, other household items will be sold in order to aid the environmentally conscious in cutting down on their rubbish has, such as Treeze Beeze beeswax wraps which can be used in place of cling film.

The shop which quietly opened it’s doors last Wednesday but was formally opened by Stroud Mayor Kevin Cranston last Saturday.

Last December the United Nations warned that marine life is facing “irreparable damage” from the millions of tonnes of plastic waste which ends up in the oceans each year.

Loose plastic free shop can be found at 25 Gloucester Street, Stroud.
