A FREE yoga and spiral spirit session will provide a fantastic opportunity in Stonehouse as part of a wider programme to keep older people active.

To kick the initiative off the fitness session will be held on Friday, April 27 at 10am in Saint Joseph’s Hall.

The yoga is part of the First Time for Everything programme, ran by the Royal Voluntary Service (RVS) charity and Prudential, a financial services group.

Abigail James, activity co-ordinator for RVS, said: “We hope older people, their carer’s and families will come along to our First Time for Everything events.

"They can enjoy interesting activities, refreshments and company in a friendly, welcoming environment.”

This comes after research by the RVS revealing 65 per cent of over 60s in the UK would be keen to try a new activity, although 29 per cent are concerned there are not enough opportunities available.

Other activities coming up in 2018 include phone photography, how to use your smartphone and tablet, walking rugby and much more.

Given a choice of pastimes older people were keen to try exercise classes, baking and ballroom dancing as their favourite activities.

Catherine Johnstone, chief executive of the charity, said: “Staying active and socialising are important at any age.

"Ageing is no barrier to trying new activities which is why we are keen to encourage older people to enjoy the benefits that participation in a range of interesting activities brings.”
