A YOUNG photographer from Marling School captured a stunning image of a stag deer.

Because of the image, James McGarva came second in the Gloucestershire Young Photographer of the Year competition.

The sixth form student called the photo golden hour deer, which he captured during sunset last summer whilst at Broadway Tower.

James said: “Wildlife photography is my hobby and I take lots of photos throughout the year so I was really excited to come second in this competition.

“I was watching a herd of wild deer but in particular, a spectacular stag caught my eye.

"It took patience but the light from the setting sun was amazing, I must have taken more than 300 shots over a couple of hours."

The competition was run by Cheltenham Camera Club and entries were received from nearly 1000 school students in Gloucestershire.

Carole Austin, head of art, said: “James is a really talented photographer and has got a great eye for capturing wildlife.

“He has worked really hard and I’m so pleased to see his efforts rewarded.”

As well as James' success, photographs taken by three other students, George Jefferson, Callum Marsh and Jack Foot were accepted for entry into an exhibition of 170 selected prints.

The exhibition will run at Chapel Arts from April 21 until May 5.
