A donkey sanctuary in Nailsworth is about to get two more residents.

A father and son approached Nailsworth Donkey Sanctuary at car boot sale last Saturday asking if they could take in two donkeys they cannot look after themselves anymore.

“The donkeys are in a bad way,” said Dawn Cockell from the sanctuary who visited the donkeys the next day.

“Their hooves look like they haven’t been done in over a year and their coats are in a bad condition.”

The sanctuary has agreed to take them in - and the paperwork is all signed - but Dawn explained that the donkeys need to get used to the team before they can head to their new home.

“We’ve been going to visit the donkeys to get them to trust us as they haven’t had much contact with people before.”

The donkeys will also have their feet trimmed by a farrier to ensure they have a comfortable move.

Nailsworth Donkey Sanctuary is a small charity on Newmarket Road that cares and rehabilitates maltreated or abandoned donkeys.

They are currently seeking donations to help pay for looking after the donkeys - including running an auction on Saturday, July 28 at the George Inn.
