Japan and its art recently took centre stage at a Stonehouse school during its week to teach its pupils about different cultures from around the world.

Hopelands Preparatory School holds a Global Awareness Week each year, with its latest county of choice being Japan.

Teachers planned a whole week of activities for the children from making sushi, taking part in a judo lesson, learning some Japanese words, and reciting numbers one to ten in Japanese.

But the high point of the week was children creating art work based renowned Japanese artists like Yayoi Kusama.

The children’s artwork was displayed in the school for two days so the parents could come and view their children’s art work.

"The art that the children produced was outstanding,” said Deborah Govier of the school.

“Many of their parents were amazed at how creative the children were and how much they understood about the artists they were learning about - including Hokusai who created the Great Wave off Kanagawa.

“The children and teachers put so much effort into the week it is brilliant to see how proud the children are when they share their work with their parents.”
