A business network for women based in Stroud is getting a new chair.

Catherine Green, who runs a legal firm with offices across Gloucestershire, is stepping down from the helm of Stroud Businesswomen’s Network after 11 years in the post.

Started back in 2006 by a group of therapists, SBN holds regular meetings to support women from a diverse range of businesses in Gloucestershire, sharing experience and advice on the world of work.

“We have a whole range of attendees, from sole traders and up,” said Catherine.

“And that’s part of our strength - we have a large pool of experience that we can all draw on.”

“Often someone stands up at a meeting to explain their new venture and you think - crikey, what a good idea!”

SBN does not shy away from addressing the difficulties faced by women in business.

As Debbie Bird, who is taking over chair from Catherine, explained: “Though it’s also true of men, women are presented with unique challenges when it comes to juggling their family lives and their business lives, and SBN helps with that balancing act.”

The Lodge on Minchinhampton Common and The Curio Lounge in Stroud are the current meeting points of choice for SBN - but over the years it has also held moots in Bar Nine (now The Ale House), Egypt Mill, and the Star Anise cafe - the latter being the original spot.

Key to SBN’s approach to its meetings is an informal, welcoming atmosphere.

“That’s something I really want to carry on from Catherine - one of the first thing newcomers say to me is how unintimidated they felt,“ said Debbie.
