There is a hidden hero to our front page story this week - Stroud Maternity Unit.

The Queen’s newest great-grandchild, daughter of Zara and Mike Tindall, was delivered there on Monday.

If things had gone a little differently a decade ago, the Minchinhampton couple would have had to have gone much further afield for one of the happiest moments of their lives.

But thanks to a campaign to save the service in 2006, which was backed by the SNJ, the baby was delivered right on their doorstep.

In the face of health chiefs trying to cut costs back then, Stroud maternity staff united, leading to an about-turn to keep the unit open.

Fears the service could shut were reignited in 2016 when the Gloucestershire NHS Foundation Trust faced a serious financial crisis.

And yet, to our community’s credit, Stroud Maternity Unit still stands today.

So, aside from well wishes to the royal baby, we should give thanks that it is Stroud printed on her birth certificate.
