WHILST in southern Spain a Horsley resident stumbled across a monument to a much-loved Stroud novelist.

Heather Nicholls came across the whitewashed monument on the seafront in Almuñécar, a small town on Spain's south coast.

"I was both astounded and delighted to find a monument to Stroud’s own, Laurie Lee," said Heather.

The monument commemorates the famed writer's centenary and describes his time spent as a young man in Almuñécar as he helped the rebel army resist the nationalist dictator, Francisco Franco.

Lee’s book A Rose for Winter, describes his return to the village following the Spanish Civil War and vividly portrays his dismay to discover that many of his Spanish friends were no longer living.

He wrote passionately of his many encounters with the people of Almuñécar and from all over southern Spain.
