A STROUD playgroup has celebrated its 50th birthday with an Ofsted report congratulating the group for its ‘highly motivated, enthusiastic and dedicated’ team.

Uplands Playgroup was inspected at the beginning of June this year and the inspector found it to be ‘outstanding’ - the highest rating a facility can achieve.

Started by a group of Uplands mums in 1968, the Ofsted report says that the group offers "an environment, [that is] stimulating and interesting."

"Children benefit from prolonged, uninterrupted time to play, explore and investigate the world around them," the report continues.

Playleader Debbi Scobell said that its success was partly due to its place in the community.

"We're right in the heart of the community here," she said.

"The three founding members of the play group still live in Uplands, and some families have seen several generations come to our sessions."

Run as a charity, the facility relies on the support of parents and the community to keep it running, the organisation recently raised £43,000 to completely renovate the original building and also fundraised to create an exciting play area for the children.

Lynsey Kelleher, who chairs the playgroup, explained that the facility is also committed to continuing to grow and develop, she said: “Our latest apprentice came to the playgroup herself!

“We also have a thriving toddler group on a Friday afternoon that welcomes children and their carers and has become an important hub for the parents in our community.”

Uplands Playgroup community will be celebrating their birthday this Sunday (July 22) from 2pm at the Fountain Inn, Slad Road with a bouncy castle, music, games and activities.
