Highways crews will be resurfacing a stretch of the A46 from Pitchcombe through Painswick village overnight between August 6 to 22.

This is the second scheme to repair part of the A46 and follows directly on from the Stroud to Pitchcombe resurfacing works completed in June as part of Gloucestershire County Council’s £150 million investment into the county’s highways.

The A46 and B4073 will be closed to through traffic from 7pm to 7am and a signposted diversion will be in place.

The works will take place overnight and not at weekends to minimise disruption to residents.

To help limit the noise disturbance to residents and visitors in Painswick village, crews will aim to finish work in the village itself by midnight each evening.

However the road will remain closed to through traffic as work will continue to the north and south of Painswick until 7am.

This second set of works will use 2000 tonnes of material to cover 14,200 square metres of road resurface - that is nearly enough tarmac to cover the area of the Forest Green Rovers pitch three times.

Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways, said, “As another part of the council’s ongoing £150 million spend on our roads we are making good progress to fix the A46, investing in another stretch of this key route through Stroud district.

“I would like to thank residents and local businesses for their patience during these works - it will be worth it when it’s complete.”

Cllr Keith Rippington, local member for Stroud: Bisley and Painswick, said, “This is a major route for visitors and commuters as well as residents – it’s the main route through the village and I’m sure you’ll agree it’s in need of some attention.

“Please remember to plan your journeys around these closures, as there may be delays and changes to bus times.”

The diversion route, suitable for HGVs:

From the south extent of the closure continue to the junction with the A4173, at the junction turn right and continue along the road in the Gloucester direction. At the roundabout with the A38 (Finley Road) take the second exit and stay on the A38 until you reach a roundabout leading onto A417. At the roundabout take the second exit onto A417 towards Brockworth. Continue along the A417 and at the junction with the A46 turn right. Diversion is the same in reverse.
