PLANS are underway for a 'world class' BMX pump track in Stroud which would encompass an area of around 1200 square metres.

Organisers hope to raise around £100,000 for the track which is likely to be built by Velosolutions who are global leaders in pump track and trail building.

Matt Hughes who is organising Stroud's prospective BMX track spoke of his motivation for the project.

"Stroud has not had a BMX track since 1990 and it would provide a fantastic opportunity for both adults and kids to get out the house," said Mr Hughes.

"I think it is important we give our kids the freedom we enjoyed when we were young, they now spend too much time online."

A pump track is essentially a scaled down BMX track that is designed primarily for learning new skills, rather than racing.

The aim for Stroud's track is that it will be suitable and challenging for people of all ages and abilities.

"Ideally it would be good if the track could be built in Stratford Park - we want to prove to the council that there is a need for a track of such high quality in Stroud," added Mr Hughes.

"It would be great if your readers can take part in our survey to help gauge support for the track."

As things stand, discussions with David Hagg the chief executive at Stroud District Council are ongoing, although talks over the track are at an early stage.
