Cainscross WI with 'The Wandering Cook'

OUR meeting at Cainscross in early August was well attended with most members present and also three visitors which was great.

We did however have apologies from Dot Brunning, Georgie Hall and Rose Philpott and we hope to see them again soon.

Val Dalby had arranged some lovely orange and lemon table flowers for us with orange and lemon chrysanthemums.

The arrangement also included some lovely little pompom dahlias in green.

After Jerusalem, we discussed some correspondence received which included some details of the WI Centenary Celebrations planned for next year and the Exhibition planned for Gloucester Cathedral.

Linda updated us on our Finances and Doreen had samples available of the crafts that we could ‘have a go at’ next meeting.

With business concluded, we welcomed Mr Richard Burton with his talk on ’The Wandering Cook’.

Richard started his working life with the demonstration of fondue sets at stores far and wide, from Wolverhampton to Watford and at one store he was based in the kitchen section, whilst his wife was resident in the fashion department.

He moved on to demonstrating knife skills and had with him his favourite set of Henckles Knife and Sharpener which he demonstrated for us using a leek which he cut into a pretty ribbon shape and carrots which he showed us how to dice.

He was a very likeable speaker and arrived nicely ahead of time which saved me from worrying when he would turn up.

I understand he is cutting back now on his number of talks, but possibly he could be persuaded to return on another occasion.

The evening finished, as usual, with the calling of the raffle, refreshments and the announcement of the competition winners for a Favourite Recipe as:-

First - Mary Jarrett

Second - Margaret Adams

As already mentioned, our next meeting will be a Craft Evening with many crafts to try out and you would be most welcome to join us at St Matthew’s Church Hall, Cainscross on Tuesday, September 4, but we would need to know what craft you would like to participate in.

The meeting will start as usual at 7.15pm and for more details or to book a craft, please telephone 01453 762812.
