Hilltop Gardening Club's Autumn Show

THE Autumn Show took place on September 8, in Eastcombe Village Hall and it was a good example of triumph over adversity.

The hall was ablaze with flowers and colourful vegetables despite the problems experienced by gardeners this year.

There were over 220 entries, more than last year, and the flower arrangement classes where particularly well supported.

There were plenty of jams, marmalade and chutneys together with cakes, tarts and bread.

The photograph section included some classes for children this year and the standard of the exhibits was considerably higher than in previous years.

Some members of the club made an early appearance at 6.45am to prepare the hall for the exhibitors and it was all ready by 8.30am.

Our judges took great care over their judging and there were plenty of written comments for exhibitors to take to heart.

It was amazing to see how many gardeners had found flowers in their gardens which, when all assembled, provided a wonderful aroma when entering the hall and which formed a glorious blaze of colour in the centre of the hall.

The display of vegetables in the class ‘Any other vegetable’ was exceptional, it included red peppers, yellow sweet corn, a dappled green marrow, purple onions, an aubergine and curious pale yellow cucumbers.

It is hoped that those who exhibited felt that the effort to produce something edible and or beautiful was well worth it and it may encourage others to enter next year.
