Dickinson's Real Deal draws in the crowds

A HOPEFUL stream of people passed through Stroud's Subscription Rooms on Sunday to haggle over the best price for their heirlooms and collectables with TV presenter David Dickinson.

ITV'S Real Deal was in town for the day and hundreds turned out to find out if they had been hoarding trash or treasure.

Margaret and Steven Wills from Stroud queued patiently with a complete selection of Shirley Bassey vinyl LPs and although the box was a bit battered, Margaret said the records had never been played.

She was also hoping for a deal on a set of 1950s champagne glasses.

"I don't drink so they are no good to me," said Margaret.

Emma Gleed from Ruscombe brought along her collection of Nat West porcelain pigs.

"I have had them in my loft since I was a child. They were an incentive for children to save at the time, the more you saved the bigger the pig you were given," she said.

Jenny Keyte from Chalford wanted to have some rings valued which had been in the family for generations but she didn't particularly want to part with them.

And Pat Croot from King's Stanley brought along a piece of ceramic which she had bought in a charity shop three years ago.

"I was intrigued by it at the time. I am curious to see if it is worth anything today," she said.

David Dickinson mingled with the crowd posing for pictures and giving autographs.

"It has been a good turnout with a good assortment of items," he told the SNJ.

"A dealer paid £1,600 this morning for a Dunhill lighter which could easily have been mistaken for a novelty piece.

"And a painting was valued at £500 but the owner decided to send it to auction."

Mr Dickinson added: "You never know what is going to come out at these events. Every town brings different things.

"But it is always interesting, it doesn't really matter if things are valuable or not. The fun is in finding out."
