Eastington Primary is 'outstanding'

The school was awarded Grade 1, meaning outstanding, and praised for providing 'first class' education.

"Consistent, exemplary provision, sustained high standards, excellent academic achievement and outstanding personal development and wellbeing reflect this splendid learning community," stated inspector Alex Baxter.

The report also commended headteacher Malcolm Strang for creating a 'forward-thinking' school.

"The school's promotion of 'enjoyment and achievement' is exemplary - it stems from the work of an inspirational headteacher," it stated.

"The accomplished headteacher has established a distinctive, caring and forward-thinking school.

"The school really is at the 'cutting edge' of education in its approach to target setting, personalising learning and involving pupils in self-evaluation."

Mr Barker recognised pupils' excellent attitude towards school and their eagerness to learn.

"A culture of learning from, and with, each other permeates all aspects of school life," the report states.

"In particular, the pupils' reading, speaking and enquiry skills are extremely well developed, equipping them fully for the future.

"Pupils' ideas are valued and facilities such as picnic tables, parasols and additional play equipment illustrate the school's positive response to their suggestions."

The report does highlight some areas which need improving, including the lack of opportunities to use computers to support learning.

Mr Strang said the school's biggest achievement has been instilling positive attitudes towards learning.

"The key to this is building good relationships between teachers and pupils," he said.

"If we are serious about raising the bar for children's standards we must have high expectations - they have to work outside their comfort zone and be challenged in a productive way.

"We are fortunate in that we have some really good schools in Stroud and I think we need to celebrate that."
