POLICE are warning drivers to be aware of the hundreds of cows that were released onto the commons today.
More than 400 cattle will be let out to roam Minchinhampton and Rodborough Commons over the next few weeks.
Banners have already been put up at entrances to both commons reminding motorists to 'moooove safely,' Inspector Kevin Roseblade, of Gloucestershire Police, said the 40mph limit should not be viewed as a target to aim at.
"All speed limits are there for a reason and it is up to everyone, whether in a car or on a motor cycle, to drive at an appropriate speed," he said.
"If motorists drive carefully and use their common sense, everyone will be safer."
Colin Southwood, manager at Stroud Fire Station, said he hopes the publicity will make people think twice.
"All too often we have to deal with the aftermath of accidents involving motor vehicles and cattle," he said.
"These are big animals, which, if hit can cause severe damage to a vehicle, possible serious injury to drivers and passengers and and usually end in the death of the animal."
