A CAR smashed into an Amberley playground from Culver Hill - for the second time in eight months.

The driver lost control on a sharp bend and crashed through Amberley Parochial School's stone wall at 10.45pm last night.

Two young men were treated for minor injuries after the vehicle landed upside down in the new adventure playground.

Police, ambulance and a fire crew attended the scene and the driver was taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.

A similar incident happened in September 2007, when a driver lost control along the same stretch of road, catapulted off a verge and crashed through another playground just yards away from the school.

Jo Woolley, headteacher of Amberley School, was alerted to the crash by a neighbour at the time.

"We have been saying for months that the speed limit needs reducing," she said.

"It is a very steep hill with extremely sharp bends and it's a dangerous place to drive at night - especially when the cows are out.

"Two cars have landed in playgrounds and something needs to be done - we need crash barriers around the school wall."

While the play equipment is not believed to be damaged, the area, which was only built last year, will have to be closed off until it is assessed for risk and the wall is repaired.

Helen Norman, assistant at the nearby Amberley Playgroup, believes there will be fatality unless action is taken.

"My eight-year-old daughter goes to that school," said Ms Norman, who discovered last year's car wreck next to the church, where the playgroup runs.

"Thankfully no children were in either playground at the time but when I saw the car at the school I burst into tears."

County councillor Stan Waddington, cabinet member for the environment, said reducing the speed limit would be ineffective.

"We would have to enforce it by putting in traffic calming measures and that's something we can't do on the common," he said.

"If anything it is going to have to be barriers but whether that's feasible I don't know.

"There are 100 sites across the county where there have been deaths or injuries and we haven't even got enough money to address these.

"But I will take this up with highways and see whether it is possible to install a barrier."
