A SCHOOL near Stroud which closed after a damning Ofsted report has been put up for sale at £4m.

Wynstones School in Whaddon shut its doors two years ago and is now on the market through estate agents Avison Young.

The independent Steiner Waldorf boarding school, which had many pupils from Stroud, closed in 2020 after education watchdog Ofsted found it had ‘serious and widespread failures’.

An attempt was made to relaunch the school in September 2021 but after an insufficient number of pupils enrolled the plans were scrapped.

Avison Young are now marketing the property for potential residential, healthcare, commercial, hotel and leisure use.

Originally built in the 1800s, the site features multiple buildings, including courtyard outbuildings, a theatre building and sports hall with approximately 3,825 square metres of floorspace.

The site also offers new build development potential, subject to planning permission.

The property area is approximately 3.85 hectares (9.51 acres), and is set within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with views to Robinswood Hill.

Wynstones closed in January 2020 after inspectors found ‘fundamental failings’ that placed children at ‘risk of serious harm’.

The inspectors said Wynstones’s safeguarding culture was ‘weak’, as ‘leaders, managers, staff and trustees do not protect children from harm’.

The report, which followed an inspection on November 27 to 29, said: “Statutory safeguarding guidance is not fully understood or followed.

“Leaders and managers have failed to ensure effective management of safeguarding matters.”

The private school taught around 200 pupils aged between three and 19, charging up to £10,000 a year.

It followed the principles of Rudolph Steiner, which focus on learning through creativity and imagination.

It opened in 1937, and the staff included some teachers who had come to England after the closure of the German Waldorf schools by the Nazi government.

The school had great success during the war years, with its countryside location, away from the bombing of the cities, making it an attractive option for parents.

Notable alumni of the school include Mick Fleetwood, drummer and co-founder of Fleetwood Mac, actor Peter Bridgmont (1929 - 2019) and artist Tim Noble.
