A COUNCIL has apologised for a key road closure causing long traffic delays across the Stroud area.

Stratford Road near the Tesco Superstore is currently shut with Gloucestershire Highways team - from Gloucestershire County Council -  carrying out "emergency drainage repairs".

The closure has been in place for almost two weeks, since Monday, October 30, and was due to reopen on Monday, November 6.

However, works were delayed by a week due to “weather and onsite complications” and the reopening delayed.

Gloucestershire County Council has now apologised for the disruption.

It is due to reopen in two days on Friday, November 10 at 4.30pm.

The closure has caused traffic chaos on surrounding roads, which many drivers have labelled a "nightmare” on social media.

Multiple bus services have also been significantly delayed due to congestion.

Stagecoach West announced today on X that three different services - the 62, 63, and 64 - had been delayed, with the 10.15am 64 bus running 55 minutes late.

A GCC spokesperson said: “We would like to apologise to residents for any inconvenience caused by the continued closure of Stratford Road.

“We are investigating the source of a suspected blockage in the drainage pipework, which caused a hole to appear in the carriageway during extreme rainfall recently.

“We are continuing to investigate and need the road closed for the safety of the workforce and all road users.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience and will update residents as soon as possible.”
