STUDENTS from Stroud High Sixth Form enjoyed an evening of success at a Modern Languages South West Schools' debating competition, hosted at Clifton College in Bristol on 31st January.
Competing from schools across the region they entered Teams from Year 12 French, Year 12 German and Year 13 German, winning their debates in each category.
Mr Lewis, modern foreign languages teacher in the Sixth Form, said: "The debates are formal with speeches, summations and a lengthy cut and thrust of questioning and responding to questions, which the French call a “lutte acharnée” or relentless combat!
"They debated the pros and cons of social media and whether the French education system is better than the English system.
"All of this entirely in German or French."
"Some of the SHS team members hadn’t debated in English before and certainly none had debated in a foreign language.
"And as for the results: all three teams won their debates and were complemented on their preparation, teamwork and quality of language."
While the debates were happening students from Year 10 to Year 12 were heading to Spain for their exchange programme.
