AHEAD OF upcoming elections, Stroud Town Council hosted an event in order to inspire and inform women about 'how they can have their voices heard'.

All 18 councillor seats at the council will be up for election on Thursday, May 2 and last week Stroud Town Council hosted an event in partnership with the organisation 'Elect Her' which aims to encourage more women to participate in politics.

At the heart of the event was the 'Be a Councillor' workshop, where attendees had the chance to interact with inspirational figures from local politics.

Through discussions and testimonials, women gained valuable insights into the responsibilities, challenges, and rewards of being a councillor in Stroud.

Stroud News and Journal: Event at Stroud Town Council to encourage more women to stand for electionStroud's existing female councillors welcomed many women to their London Road offices to enjoy the screening.

This event was not just about inspiring women to engage in politics at large but specifically to seize the local opportunities awaiting them in their own town.

Stella Parkes, a current town councillor and mayor, expressed her excitement about the event, emphasising its importance in encouraging women to consider their role in shaping the future of their town.

Ms Parkes said: "The 'Elect Her' workshop was an eye-opener for many women.

"It showcased the tangible impact that councillors can have on our local community.

"With the upcoming elections on May 2, now is the perfect time for women to step up and make their voices heard."

CEO Town Clerk Helen Bojaniwska said: “It was wonderful to see women of all ages coming together to do the ‘Elect her’ workshop.

"The speakers were inspiring and showed what an impact being a councillor can have on the local environment and community.

"We encourage all Stroud women to reflect on whether they might have a role in their most local tier of government and contact the council@stroudtown.gov.uk to find out more."

The event not only served as a platform for inspiration but also as a practical guide for aspiring councillors.

Attendees received guidance on how to navigate the electoral process, understand the responsibilities of the role, and effectively campaign for their candidacy.
