A ROMAN coin hoard found near Nailsworth has been saved for Stroud district thanks to the support of local people.
At the beginning of April Stroud's Museum in the Park appealed for donations towards the purchase of nine Roman coins found near Nailsworth.
Many museum objects are donated, but as these coins were Treasure Act finds, they must be bought, so that finder and the landowner can be rewarded.
The coins were included in the popular mini foyer exhibition, 'Local Treasures Lost and Found' which recently showed at the Museum. "We're absolutely delighted to announce that the Museum can purchase the coin hoard," said Marta Cock, chairman of the Friends of the Museum.
"Thanks to the Trefoil Trust and many local people who gave a donation, the coins can now be displayed and appreciated in Stroud's local museum."
David Mullin, the district council’s museum collections officer, said: "I am very pleased that we are now able to buy these coins. They are beautiful as well as interesting.
"Local people will be able to enjoy them now and in the future.
"I would like to thank the Friends of the Museum for organising the appeal and everyone who contributed." ‘Local Treasures Lost and Found’ has come to an end, but the Nailsworth coin hoard can now be seen in the museum’s recent acquisitions case.
The coins and some of the other ‘Local Treasures’ will soon go on permanent display in the archaeology gallery. The Museum in the Park in Stratford Park, Stroud, is open Tuesday to Friday 10am to 5pm and is open Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday Mondays 11am to 5pm. Admission is free.
