Gloucestershire’s Lord- Lieutenant, Sir Henry Elwes has announced 4 new deputies.
The number of Deputy Lord-Lieutenants is dependant on the county’s population and four new appointments have now been made.
The new deputies have all made significant contributions either nationally, or to local voluntary activities and they are: 〈 Caroline Penley, Uley 〈 Major General Sir Evelyn Webb-Carter KCVO, OBE, Fairford 〈 The Reverend Canon Michael Irving LVO, Painswick 〈 John Campbell Thurston, Lydney Lord-Lieutenant, Sir Henry Elwes, said: “The role of the deputies is very important to the life of the county. I am sure that they will find their role varied and interesting and I look forward to their support over the coming year.”
Sir Henry Elwes has been the Queen’s ceremonial representative for Gloucestershire since 1992 and is responsible for a wide range of duties, including civic events. The high volume of events and duties taking place in the county means that it is necessary for him to have deputies to share some of the load.
Gloucestershire has had a Lord-Lieutenant since 1559. He was originally tasked with training local men to lead them against rebels and foreign invaders
