THE last report covered our June meeting and, since we hibernate during the holiday season this one will cover our July and September meetings as we do not meet in August – but then, that is not strictly true since our July meeting usually takes the form of a garden meeting and is held on the first Monday in August (in the hope that the weather will be kind enough to let us hold it in Edna Helson’s lovely garden). This year, as in several previous years, the weather was uncertain and unkind, so our July garden meeting was held in the village hall in August, and a good time was had by all. Many thanks were given to the organisers for arranging such a super ploughman’s lunch which was enjoyed by everybody. Now we are back in harness and a very well attended meeting was held on September 14 when the business was dealt with in our usual efficient fashion, including arrangements for the monthly pub lunch to be held on Wednesday, September 30 at the Rose & Crown, Nympsfield. Members were asked to obtain shoe boxes and items to be included in them, ready for the next meeting. The tickets for the Autumn County Meeting were available and a letter of thanks from the organising committee of the village fair was read.

Our speaker for the evening was a very welcome return of Celia Hargrave who this time was to tell us about her experiences on the Himalayan 100. This covered 100 miles at altitudes of 6 000 feet and covered mileage of 100 over 5 days. Somehow Celia describes her experiences and the fantastic scenery enjoyed in spite of the pain endured in this marathon run (or as she described it – climb and descent). She could not praise enough the treatment given to the runners and the way the people went out of their way to be kind and helpful. We are hoping that Celia Hargrave will undertake another such event so that she can come back to us with another of her enthralling talks.

Visitors are always very welcome to our meetings, which are usually held in the village hall from 7.30 pm. on the second Monday evening of each month.
