THE October meeting of the W I was again well attended with very few apologies. The meeting noted the quantity of birthday posies distributed this month, and thanks were expressed to Maud for her artistry in putting them together. The treasurer advised that the Bring and Buy stall last month raised £15.30 and this will help with the postage for the Christmas Child shoe boxes. Three members joined in the walk on October 1 and expressed their enjoyment in the weather and the location. Members were asked to consider joining the committee and reminded that November is the month for the Annual General Meeting. Members were advised that the spring Group Meeting will be on April 20 at Randwick Village Hall. There followed the announcement of the over-subscribed Christmas Carol Concert to be held in Cheltenham on Wednesday, December 2. It was a difficult decision but it was considered that the fairest way of allocating the tickets we had been allotted was to eliminate non-WI applications and to draw lots by the remaining members. Needless to say there were many disappointed people.
The October lunch will be on Tuesday, October 20 at the Carpenters’ Arms, and the November lunch will be arranged to be at Highfield Garden Centre so members can spend time shopping.
We were told that the Christmas Child shoe boxes are coming along well and our gratitude was expressed for the generosity of members and friends in this worthy cause. After this meeting a sale was held of holiday souvenirs and raised a further sum of £50 to help with the postage of these boxes.
There will be a flat, shortish walk at Saul on Thursday October 29 and many ladies expressed interest in joining this new venture. So – meet at the village hall at 10am on the day. It was then put to the meeting that the December meeting (our Christmas party) should be moved to December 7th (a week earlier than usual) so that it did not clash with the Monday Club Christmas lunch on the 14th. This was agreed to be a good idea and accepted unanimously. As you can tell from the above, there was plenty of business to get through before we had the great pleasure of hearing Susan Marshfield tell us about her experiences of saying ‘Thank you, Doctor’. We had a most enjoyable evening in her company and if laughter is a remedy for all ills, then we at Leonard Stanley must be a healthy group of ladies after time spent with Susan. There were many with sore sides from laughing so much.
The next meeting on November 9 will be our Annual General Meeting and, once the business of the evening is dealt with, Tom Williams will give us a talk about Bees – this will tie in with the Resolution passed at the National AGM held in the summer and will give us an insight into the importance of bees in life.
Visitors are always very welcome to our meetings, which are usually held in the village hall from 7.30pm on the second Monday evening of each month.
