Gap year student to hold auction for Aftrica trip

GAP year student Anna McSweeney is to hold an auction on Tuesday, November 10 to raise funds for her to volunteer as a teacher in Africa.

Anna, 18, a former Stroud High student, needs to raise £2,000 to enable her to help run a rural school in Tanzania for five months.

"My message to people is please donate towards my cause so I can have this life-changing opportunity," said Anna, who is to study geography at the University of London.

"I have learnt a lot about the developing world and I want to experience it for myself."

Anna hopes to travel out on January 18 to the Arusha area of Tanzania, near Mt Kilimanjaro, to teach English, geography, art and PE to her own class of up to 60 pupils.

But she needs money for injections, the flight, accommodation, food and drink. Anna, of Belle Vue Road, Stroud, has already raised £2,500 towards the £4,500 trip through working as a shop assistant at Kendrick Street Galley and cleaning Stroud Valleys Artspace in John Street.

The auction will be at the senior hall of Stroud High at 7pm.

Anna will be auctioning promises, including dog-walking, baby-sitting and guitar lessons, as well as items including vases and Christmas lights.

Anyone wishing to donate to the auction can call Anna on 01453 756986.
