9:10am Saturday 21st November 2009
THE November meeting took the form of our AGM in common with all WIs countrywide. The normal meeting was dealt with efficiently and arrangements made for a short walk at Saul Junction on November 12 (weather permitting). The walk in October proved popular on a sunny morning, and it was decided to repeat this. As it happened, it was a glorious morning weather-wise and the day turned out to be the best few hours between storms and rain. The social WI lunch in November will be on the 25th when we visit Highfield Garden Centre at Whitminster. This will give members a chance to do some shopping and enjoy each other’s company at lunch. We were able to send 28 shoe boxes to Christmas Child thanks to members’ and friends’ generosity, and the hard work by Christine Screen and Ann Vale who prepared the boxes ready for despatch. Congratulations were expressed to Madeline Little who celebrated 50 years of membership of the WI in November. Having dealt with the business of the meeting, we then attended to the Annual General Meeting, taking the routine as in the past. The secretary’s report reminded us of our activities during the past year, and the treasurer’s report reflected a healthy balance. The election of the president then took place and, as there was no other candidate, the present president was re-elected. There were no names wishing to be considered for the committee so, the committee was re-elected en bloc. Following the AGM, Tom Williams spoke to the meeting about the keeping of bees and the problems encountered with the infection causing such problems at present. He took us through the ‘year of the bee’ and, with the use of a hive, told us of the life-cycle of a swarm of bees. As this was the subject of the WI Resolution in 2009, this was a most appropriate subject for the members to learn the problems encountered by bee-keepers at the moment.
The next meeting on should be on December 14 but, with the members’ approval, it will be on December 7 and will take the form of our Christmas party. This change will avoid clashing with the Monday Club Christmas lunch on December 14. Members were asked to bring with them a knife, a spoon, a plate and a dish as this will minimise time in the kitchen. Visitors are always very welcome to our meetings, which are usually held in the Village Hall from 7.30pm. on the second Monday evening of each month.
