FIREFIGHTERS had to rescue a sausage dog which went on the run and climbed into the engine compartment of a neighbour's car in Uley.

Dexter, a five-year-old dachshund, was being looked after by Carole Smith at her home in South Street, Uley on Saturday when the incident happened.

He ran off and managed to climb into the engine compartment of an Audi A5 owned by villager Miranda Goose, who called firefighters.

Despite biting officers through their protective gloves, a crew from Nailsworth managed to coax him out.

Mrs Goose said: "The little dog caused so much mischief. I would like to say a big thank you to the firefighters who were so kind and helpful."

Dexter was eventually returned to his owners, Carole's son Paul, his wife Liz and their daughter Katie, six, unharmed but exhausted.
