A major resurfacing scheme to one of Gloucester’s busiest through roads will begin soon.

Work to reconstruct Seymour Road between Cecil Road and Tuffley Avenue is being planned as a matter of urgency as the condition of the road has greatly deteriorated recently. The works will require several weeks of major road reconstruction and will mean that a full road closure will be needed on this part of Seymour Road.

In the meantime, an emergency temporary weight restriction of 7.5 tonnes on Seymour Road between Cecil Road and Tuffley Avenue has been put in place today to prevent further damage to the failing road. This will mean that access can still be maintained for residents and local businesses.

However, the Stagecoach Number 10 bus will be diverted along Bristol Road and heavy delivery vehicles that serve the Co-Op and The Seymour Pub will have access from the Stroud Road end.

Cllr Mark Hawthorne, Lead Cabinet Member for Environment and local county councillor, said: “The reconstruction of this busy road is a top priority as the condition of the surface has deteriorated so much that, in a short space of time, it could become unsafe for road users. “Patching work was carried out last week but this failed because of the continuing use of the road by heavy vehicles. We have now put an emergency weight restriction in place to protect the surface until the major works can begin. We are currently looking at our options to get this work done quickly, safely and in the most cost effective way.”

Details of diversion routes and access arrangements during the road closure will be made known nearer the time.
