Police find handgun in car in Gloucester

During an investigation into the theft of a high value car, police in Gloucester discovered and removed an illegal handgun from the streets.

Officers were investigating a disturbance in the Abbeymead area of Gloucester at around 2pm on Wednesday February 3 which was linked to the theft of a BMW X5 in Eastern Avenue about an hour earlier.

The car was later recovered by police in Upton St Leonards.

During the investigation, police also discovered around £2500 worth of cocaine, an illegal handgun and ammunition.

Acting Detective Inspector Richard Pegler said: "To remove a handgun and ammunition from the streets of Gloucester is an excellent piece of work.

“The criminal use of firearms will not be tolerated in the city and those involved will be dealt with positively to ensure public safety.

“Thankfully this type of incident is extremely rare across the county and not only have we recovered the gun, but seized a large amount of cocaine and a stolen BMW worth £40,000-00.”

A 46-year-old man from Dursley and a 43-year-old man from Gloucester were arrested in connection to this incident. They have been released on police bail to return to Gloucester Police Station on June 1 pending further enquiries.

A 39-year-old man from Gloucester has been charged with possessing a firearm. He will appear at Cheltenham Magistrates Court on Friday February 5.
