Gloucestershire’s young people will find out on Thursday (11th February) who will be their Youth MP (MYP) for the year ahead.

This year there are 36 candidates standing across the county: 21 young people in the Gloucester/ Forest Constituency; six young people in the Cotswolds/ Stroud Constituency; and nine young people in the Cheltenham/ Tewkesbury Constituency.
The candidate with the highest number of votes in each constituency will be the Youth MP and the candidate with the second highest number of votes will be the Deputy Youth MP.
Results will be announced by: · Martin Horwood, MP for Cheltenham, for the Cheltenham and Tewkesbury Consituency · Mark Harper, MP for Forest of Dean, for the Gloucester and Forest Constituency · David Drew, MP for Stroud, for the Cotswold and Stroud Constituency.
Cllr Stephen McMillan, Cabinet member for young people’s support, said: “We are looking forward to meeting the new wave of enthusiastic Youth MPs and hearing their ideas. Our MYPs have been doing a great job over the last few years, championing the issues that really matter to them. They’re a fantastic resource for the county. Who knows, there might be a budding Chancellor, Home Secretary or even Prime Minister in their midst!”
Following the elections, the successful candidates will carry out their duties nationally and locally, working with youth forums and councils, local young people, councillors and MPs. They will also attend termly South West Youth Parliament meetings where they will represent the county’s youth and take part in debates.
Elections took place on 1st-3rd February at polling stations (secondary schools and youth centres) around the county. All children and young people aged 11-18 were eligible to vote.
The elections were delayed due to the recent bad weather and school closures. Originally the elections were due to take place 18th-20th January, with results 28th January.
