A PROJECT to refurbish the Paganhill Maypole Village Hall is to continue this spring thanks to two major grants.
Gloucestershire Environmental Trust, which raises money from landfill operations, has pledged £20,000 to help repair and upgrade the facility in Stratford Road.
Stroud District Council has also donated £8,950 to improve the outside of the hall from its village halls and community buildings grant scheme.
Volunteers are now set to start phase two of the £90,000, four-phase project within the next six weeks.
Sue Sutton, secretary of the management committee, said: "I am delighted.
"The project is about making the hall much more attractive, and up to date, so we can get more residents using it."
Constructed by landowner George Matthews and builder Ted Wheeler to replace a wooden community hut, the hall was opened in 1962.
Over the years, it hall has been used for dozens of meetings, classes and parties, but is now in need of upgrading.
Phase one, which finished in September, involved the installation of cavity wall insulation, loft insulation and a new heating system.
Under phase two, which will cost about £37,000, the toilets will be refurbished and a new disabled toilet will be installed.
Barnwood House Trust, a charity which provides grants to help people with complex disabilities, has donated £750 towards the disabled toilet.
The front doors will be replaced to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act, the leaking roof will be repaired and new railings will be put in place outside.
Workmen will modernise the electric system and install efficient lighting.
An old water mains pipe, which is currently contaminating the water supply with lead, will be replaced with a plastic pipe.
Two notice boards donated by Stroud Town Council will also be erected outside The committee still needs to raise about £7,300 for the phase but hopes to receive the rest in grants before April.
The main work will last about four to five weeks.
Donate to the appeal by leaving a cheque payable to ‘Paganhill Maypole Hall’ for the care of treasurer Martin Kavanagh at Paganhill Post Office.
