Students get career advice from Step Up Stroud


Young people in the Stroud district were recently given a unique opportunity to get invaluable career advice, and top tips to help plan their future at the ‘Step Up Stroud – Get a Plan!’ event.

Around 90 students, from secondary schools across the district, attended the ‘Step Up Stroud - Get a Plan!’ event, held at Stroud College on Thursday 11th February. The students spent a day hearing from top business experts about different career options and were also introduced to a whole range of businesses in workshops and presentations.

Led by Stroud District Council in partnership with local business organisations Stroud FSB and Stroud Chamber of Commerce as well as Stroud College, the EBP, Gloucestershire First and Three Sector Match, the aim of the event was to introduce a number of diverse career options and encourage young people to focus on a career direction.

Students and teachers were welcomed to the day long event by Deputy Leader of Stroud District Council, Keith Pearson. Commenting on the day Councillor Pearson said: “This was such a worthwhile event and offers the next generation a great opportunity to hear firsthand from local business experts. I hope that the students found the day useful and that it helps them to make the right decision about their future career.”

12 businesses across Gloucestershire hosted workshops concentrating on the following five areas: · design & build · customer services · creative arts & media · Sustainable industries · hospitality & events Those businesses who took part included GCHQ who presented a workshop on hospitality, Quadra Architects who talked about the construction industry, and Sainsbury’s and Stroud and Swindon Building Society who focussed on customer services. Students also got to the opportunity to learn about a career in journalism from Sue Smith, Editor at the Stroud News and Journal.

As well as workshops, students also heard from local business leaders such as Sabrina Pace-Humphreys, Managing Director of Trailblazer PR and Adam Starkey from Green Gourmet. They, alongside Rob Rees MBE, known as The Cotswold Chef, were eager to share their own personal stories of career progression and their decision to run their own business.
