Business First 2004 exhibition is being hailed a success by its organisers with visitor numbers topping last year's record.

The two-day show, organised by Croydon Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by the Guardian, pulled in 2,161 visitors a 25 per cent increase on last year.

Held at Fairfield Halls last Wednesday and Thursday, the exhibition attracted businesses from across the south-east including big names like Barclays, Lloyds TSB Bank and the Learning and Skills Council.

But the exhibition was not only about national corporations. It was also a valuable networking opportunity for entrepreneurs and smaller companies.

This year's biggest successes were the Trading Places area, where small and medium-sized businesses met with potential buyers, and the Indulgence Zone where visitors could be pampered with Thai massage and aromatherapy.

This year emphasis was placed on having fun, with light-hearted events including a fashion show, and a Question Time slot where visitors grilled a panel made-up of politicians and police representatives.

Angelina Purcell, chief executive of the chamber, said: "This year's success was certainly Trading Places. All of the businesses that took part in that came away with positive feedback. Many of the buyers have said they want to come back next year.

"I think that's something we are going to have to include again next year."

Exhibitor and chairman of Croydon Round Table of Inventors, Barry Slayford praised the London Development Agency-sponsored innovation zone.

He said: "The innovation zone has been really good. It's meant that we've had a much greater presence this year. So we are particularly pleased the London Development Agency have sponsored the zone."
