TEMPORARY traffic lights have been re-established on a stretch of the A46 as work continues to repair the road surface and prevent it slipping any further.

The work at Cooper’s Hill has been restarted following a break over Christmas, and is still well on track to be over by May.

The scheme includes the construction of a new retaining wall, the use of tensioned steel rods as ground anchors and the laying of a new drainage system that will support the highway embankment.

Cllr Stan Waddington, cabinet member for environment, said: "This scheme is extremely important as the A46 is one of the busiest roads in the county with around 7,000 vehicles using it every day.

"I am pleased to see how well it is progressing and I hope the works remain on schedule for the rest of the project.

"Finally, I’d like to thank drivers for their patience while this work is carried out."

The next stage of the works will see the Gloucester-bound carriageway closed from Monday January 3 and a traffic management system put in place to control the flow of traffic.
