A STROUD district councillor has become embroiled in a row over a spoof You Tube clip which shows Hitler in his bunker supposedly shouting about cuts to the library service in Gloucestershire .

Cllr Philip Booth (Green, Over Stroud) branded the video 'great stuff' in a comment on the website but soon found himself under fire from Gloucestershire County Council leader Mark Hawthorne.

Meanwhile, Friends of Gloucestershire Libraries, who are mentioned in the clip taken from the 2004 film Downfall about Hitler’s last days, said it had nothing to do with their campaign.

Mr Hawthorne said: "I am always disgusted when idiots try to use Hitler, Nazism and the Holocaust to score political points. "Doing so insults the memory of the 11 million human beings that Adolf Hitler murdered and the 400, 000 British servicemen and women who gave their lives to stop him."

Cllr Booth, whose great grandparents were Jewish, has since removed the comment.

"Of course GCC is not anywhere close to the Third Reich. But the disregard of people's wishes and the expected impact on vulnerable people is shocking to many of us.

"If the comment was seen as insensitive then I apologise," he said.
