Police have released the results of a road survey in part of Cirencester, showing very few speeding drivers in the area.

Officers acted on concerns that motorists may have been regularly breaking the limit going through Chesterton Estate.

To discover the extent of the problem, speeds were measured on two roads – Apsley Road and Springfield Road – over a seven day period.

In relation to Apsley Road, the Speed Detection Radar (SDR) showed an average speed of 14 mph in the Bowly Road direction, with just 16 out of 3559 cars exceeding 30 mph.

In the Oakley Road direction the average speed was 17mph, with only nine out of every 3850 cars going over 30mph. That equates to roughly one car in every 400 breaking the limit.

Springfield Road had average speeds of 16 and 19mph for both directions.

Only 37 vehicles from a total of 4612 exceeded the 30mph limit in the Cranhams Lane direction and just 90 out of 4360 exceeded it the other way.

Sgt Richard Smith said: “Responding to concerns raised in the community, we set up the speed detection equipment to find out the true extent of the problem.

“We are very pleased to see that it is only a tiny percentage of road users are causing a nuisance. Of course, in any area there will always be a few drivers who ignore the rules of the road.

“Reports of speeding are taken very seriously and this is why we wanted the hard facts to show us if there was an issue.

“We hope these results reassure people living in the area that there is not a general problem. Their safety and their confidence in the policing they receive is extremely important to us.”
