PUPILS at Wycliffe College, Stonehouse have launched an appeal to raise funds for victims of the earthquake which hit Japan on March 11.

The quake, which was Japan’s most powerful earthquake since records began, struck the north-east coast, triggering a massive tsunami.

Strong waves hit Japan’s Iwate prefecture - where some pupils from Wycliffe have family.

Funds raised will go to the Iwate Learning Hope Fund which cares for orphans aged three to 18 whose parents died in the disaster.

The organisation was chosen as the school’s charity of the year and will be the subject of further fundraising efforts through the Wycliffe Pray for Japan scheme, spearheaded by the school’s Japanese teacher Sakoto Suzui.

As part of the initiative, a Bag2School campaign was held recently which saw students bring in bags of unwanted textiles which were sold for cash.

More than £400 was raised after 835kg of cloth was collected.

The next Bag2School campaign will be held in January.

Anyone wanting to donate unwanted textiles or wishing to donate to the appeal should contact the school on 01453 822432.
