SIX new lock gates were hoisted into position at Ryeford Double Lock in Stonehouse today.

The event was a major milestone for Stroud District Council, which is leading the project to restore 6.7 miles of canal between Brimscombe and Stonehouse, since it was the first time new gates have been hung at the lock for more than 100 years.

A crane lifted the huge oak gates into position, but water will not flow through the lock until January next year.

Cllr Keith Pearson, SDC cabinet member for regeneration said: "This is a huge step forward in our efforts to get the canal open between Stonehouse and Lodgemore, ready for the Stroud on Water festival next June."
