A DOCUMENTARY film being made to chronicle the history of surfing in Britain will include footage of the Severn Bore.

During a recent shoot for the film, called The Endless Winter, professional surfers Mitch Corbett and Mark ‘Egor’ Harris were filmed riding the famous wave.

In the film, the pair also trace the history of surfing the wave, which goes back more than 50 years.

The Severn Bore is one of the biggest in the world and can be seen in the estuary of the River Severn at certain times of the year.

A wave forms when water is funnelled into an increasingly narrow channel as the tide rises.

As the river flows past Avonmouth it is approximately five miles wide but as it reaches Lydney and Sharpness it is approximately one mile across.

By the time it reaches Minsterworth the river it is less than 100 yards across, maintaining this width all the way to Gloucester.

As the width of the river decreases, so does the depth, and a funnel is formed, creating the surge wave.
