DURING the last few weeks, a number of recurring issues have been debated in the House of Commons and characterised my activities in the constituency.

In the new year, I expect they will be still high up on the agenda.

Without doubt, the state of the economy is on the minds of many, especially small businesses in our area.

There is some good news with several manufacturers reporting full order books and it is worth noting that many are benefiting from investment in measures to deal with climate change.

Transport has been on my radar.

Last week, I attended a debate in Westminster Hall about the First Great Western rail franchise and I also recently met with senior managers of the company.

I am keen to build on the success of securing funding to redouble the Kemble to Swindon line by promoting the need for additional seats and services.

Another aspect of transport is the importance of road safety.

I have been helping a young constituent with her campaign to improve two parts of our network where she, herself, was involved in serious accidents.

This is a good example of the value of getting involved.

Not surprisingly, the NHS has been the subject of many enquiries to my office as the debate on reform continues.

Again there is some good news in the form of a further increase for Gloucestershire’s NHS budget.

This comes as preparations are made to formally open the new Vale Community Hospital in Dursley/Cam early next year.

Some £10 million has been invested in this exciting ‘state of the art’ project.

As the year draws to an end, I am reminded of all the Christmas events I have attended.

Notably, several carol services, parties and visits to organisations and charities.

I want to thank all of the people who ensured that these events were so enjoyable, successful and emblematic of community life.

Happy New Year!
