THE NEPHEW of a Nailsworth benefactor recently visited several of the town’s projects to see how his uncle’s £400,000 legacy has been spent.
Charles Arkell, nephew of former mayor Frank Arkell, said his uncle would have been very impressed if he had been alive to see the projects for himself.
The money has been spent on a new skateboard ramp in the King George V Playing Field, improvements to the Market Street Garden, new toilets for the town’s Subscription Rooms, repairs to the Youth Club’s roof, hearing loops installed in the Town Hall and Mortimer Rooms.
The flagship project was the building of the Arkell Community Centre in Forest Green, which was also made possible through grant funding.
"Frank Arkell has left Nailsworth a tremendous legacy which will benefit the Town for years to come," said deputy mayor Sally Thorpe, who met with Mr Arkell on his visit to Nailsworth along with mayor Stephen Robinson and Les Haines from the Subscription Rooms and Forest Green Residents Association.
"The money has meant we have been able to make huge improvements to our public spaces and buildings and we were delighted when Charles said that his uncle would have been very impressed with what we have done."
