DOZENS of people attended Nailsworth Garden Centre’s annual Grow Your Own Potatoes Weekend on February 18 and 19.

The event offered information on selecting, planting, caring for and harvesting potatoes with a team of horticultural experts on hand.

Children were encouraged to take part in a potato modelling competition in which they could create weird and wonderful creatures and people from potatoes.

The centre also hosted potato workshops offering people advice on choosing spuds to plant in their gardens, allotments and in containers on patios Kevin Brindley, manager of Nailsworth Garden Centre, said: "It is very rewarding growing your own potatoes and once you have tasted your own home-grown, freshly harvested spuds you will understand how amazing it is.

"Fresh potatoes are also packed with vitamin C and are very good for you.

"Don’t be put off if you don’t have a veg patch or allotment. Potatoes can be easily grown with minimal care in containers in a small garden, backyard or on a patio.

"Plant the potatoes in early spring and a few months later you’ll be eating tasty spuds."
